William McNarland, CFA

Where are you from originally, where do you live today, and where do you plan to retire?

I was born and grew up in Winnipeg Canada. Since then, I spent ten years living in Toronto and ten years in Calgary. This year, I spent my first winter in Vancouver and really enjoyed it. I plan on retiring somewhere warm. Right now I am thinking Cartagena, Colombia.

What led you into the finance industry?

I spent most of my career in the public markets, but in 2008, I was looking for some alternatives to public stocks and bonds. After much research, I was intrigued. It has ended up being more than the adventure I had imagined. I have worked in some capacity with over 300 companies across all the continents of the world.

Tell us about your current company and role in the industry?

I am the Managing Director at Eiffel Peak Capital, a boutique Merchant Bank based in Canada with a strong Chinese influence. It was started less than a year ago, but we already have two portfolio companies and plan on obtaining another company before our first anniversary.

What business goals do you want to accomplish over the next five years?

I want to continue collecting ownership in various companies. In addition, I want to sit on boards and mentor younger entrepreneurs. I enjoy sharing my experience with those who are interested.

What are your passions outside of business and family?

My life outside of those two things revolves around food and travel. I love everything to do with food including shopping for it, cooking it, reading about it, and trying new dishes. My travel track record includes going to all continents, over 50 countries, all 50 USA states and all Canadian provinces and territories.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to young entrepreneurs?

Only work on a project you are genuinely passionate about. If it feels like work, change what you are doing right now!
